Anthropic books $10bn compute deal with six-month-old startup
The AI lab is racing to lock in chips faster than it can build data centres itself.
The answer
Anthropic signed a $10bn, six-year deal with startup Volta for Nvidia chips.
What happened: Anthropic signed a roughly $10 billion, six-year compute contract with Volta Infra Holdings, Bloomberg reported on 4 August, citing people familiar with the deal. Volta confirmed a $10 billion agreement with an unnamed major AI lab the same day. Anthropic declined to comment.
The numbers: The deal covers 121 megawatts of Nvidia Vera Rubin chip capacity at Bitdeer's Tydal campus in Norway, arriving in two phases by 31 December 2026 and 31 March 2027. Underneath it sits a 16-year lease between Bitdeer's Tydal and a Volta unit worth about $4.7 billion in scheduled payments, rising to roughly $8 billion over 24 years if renewed. JPMorgan affiliates back $1.3 billion in standby letters of credit securing it.
The context: Volta is about six months old. It raised $300 million at a $2.4 billion valuation from Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter, Nvidia and the Michael Dell family office, among others, and holds a $5 billion pool to help customers finance chips. Contracts of this size used to go almost exclusively to Amazon, Microsoft or Google.
The catch: Nvidia is both an investor in Volta and its chip supplier. Critics flag that tangled supplier-customer ties like this could magnify losses across the chain if AI demand disappoints.
Who's affected: Anthropic has separately arranged about $71 billion in chip-lease financing in roughly 60 days. Special purpose vehicles buy chips, including Google TPUs, and lease them back to Anthropic, keeping the hardware and debt off its own balance sheet. Broadcom is backstopping senior tranches. Blackstone reportedly leads talks on another package.
The rivals: A $9.1 billion chip-lease deal with Riot Platforms sent Riot's shares up 25%, a sign of how these arrangements are reshaping smaller infrastructure players' valuations.
Why it matters: Demand for Claude is outpacing Anthropic's own compute build-out, pushing it toward unconventional suppliers and complex financing to secure chips fast.
What's next: The Norway capacity is due to land in two tranches over the next seven months, and Anthropic's financing spree, detailed by the Decoder and Yahoo Finance, shows no sign of slowing.
