FBI arrests OpenAI engineer over bugged executive conference room
Abdulrahman Alfozan is accused of hiding an audio recorder in a TV at OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters.
The answer
The FBI arrested an OpenAI engineer accused of planting a hidden audio recorder in an executive conference room.
What happened: The FBI arrested OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national, over an alleged hidden audio recorder at the company's San Francisco headquarters, according to the San Francisco Standard. He has worked at OpenAI since July 2025.
The charge: He is charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications. Prosecutors say he was not authorised to enter the room or attend meetings there.
The numbers: The maximum penalty is five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
The details: The first recorder was plugged into a USB port on the back of a TV in an executive conference room, hidden in toilet paper. Its contents were encrypted. OpenAI believes it was installed around 28 September and found on 30 September.
A similar recorder turned up on 5 October in a bag Alfozan left unattended in a different room. The bag also held his wallet and ID.
Why it matters: Prosecutors say meetings in the room often covered proprietary research, product plans and government engagements. FBI Director Kash Patel said protecting US AI innovation is a top counterintelligence priority, the report said.
In their words: US Attorney Craig Missakian said: "For us it is a matter of national security"
The catch: No motive has been reported. Nor has it been reported who, if anyone, the recordings were meant for.
The company's account: OpenAI says employees used its AI models to identify the device, then referred the matter to the FBI. It says it has no indication he accessed or took model weights, source code or customer data. OpenAI says it coordinated his firing with the FBI and terminated him on Friday, the day of his arrest.
What's next: Alfozan made his initial federal appearance on Tuesday 13 October and remains in custody. A detention hearing before US Magistrate Judge Alex G. Tse is set for 19 October.
