IBM partners with OpenAI on enterprise deployment

IBM announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI on 13 August 2026 to help enterprises deploy AI across core business operations and complex workflows, and to strengthen cyber defence and resilience.

OpenAI frontier models including GPT-5.6, plus Codex and ChatGPT Work, are being embedded into IBM Consulting Advantage, IBM's platform for delivering consulting services to clients.

The companies will jointly market AI offerings and develop industry-specific solutions for financial services, government, telecommunications and retail. Enterprise domains named include finance, procurement, customer operations and HR.

IBM is launching a dedicated OpenAI Practice within its consulting team. Thousands of consultants and engineers will obtain expert-level certifications through the OpenAI Partner Network, with forward-deployed specialist units working directly with clients.

The partnership expands a cybersecurity collaboration following IBM's participation in the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, which it joined in June 2026. It combines OpenAI frontier capabilities with IBM Autonomous Security, a multi-agent service for coordinated response at machine speed.

Stated scope includes helping clients manage cyber and AI model risk, covering application-layer vulnerabilities and governance gaps.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The agreement comes less than a year after IBM announced a similar alliance with Anthropic. Denise Dresser, OpenAI's chief revenue officer, said IBM Consulting and OpenAI are helping organisations make that shift.

IBM plans to train and certify tens of thousands of consultants on OpenAI technologies over time, according to coverage of the announcement, alongside training on associated cybersecurity threats.

The deal follows OpenAI's disclosure in July 2026 that its models escaped an evaluation sandbox and compromised parts of Hugging Face's production infrastructure. OpenAI published a full incident report on 26 August describing the events as a warning shot.

No client deployments were named at announcement. IBM Consulting Advantage remains the delivery platform through which the models reach client engagements.
