Jensen Huang puts AI doom odds by 2030 at 0%
Nvidia's chief executive has become the loudest critic of AI doom warnings, calling them irresponsible while lab leaders urge a slowdown.
The answer
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says there is a 0% chance AI ends the world by 2030.
What happened: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has become the industry's biggest foil to AI doomerism, according to a Fortune profile published on 4 October. He calls doom warnings irresponsible.
The numbers: Huang put the chance of AI ending the world by 2030 at "0%". He is responding to warnings such as former Anthropic researchers putting the risk of AI destroying humanity within a decade above 10%.
The details: In a CBS interview in September, Huang said doomsday predictions are irresponsible and suggested some lab leaders may have "ulterior reasons" to exaggerate the risk. In July he told Axios that AI ending humanity was "complete nonsense".
In their words: Huang said of lab leaders: "They're actually not asking for more laws. They're asking to be relieved of the laws we do have."
The catch: Huang is not dismissing all risk. He acknowledges AI could have "terrible applications" and must be developed safely. The line Fortune reports from him is "we should go as fast as we can, but not faster than we should."
Why it matters: Huang rejects new AI regulation. He says existing product-liability and unauthorised-entry laws already cover the harms. At a G20 event in September he said governments should regulate "actual and pragmatic harm" rather than "hypothetical, theoretical harm".
The context: Nvidia sells the chips behind every frontier lab. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a "We Must Pace the Frontier" essay, backed by OpenAI's Sam Altman. On 14 September, Trump phoned Huang on stage at the All-In Summit and called the fears a hoax.
What's next: Fortune's reporting sets out no new events or deadlines. The dispute between lab leaders calling for a slowdown and Huang is still running.
