Microsoft books $10 billion from OpenAI deals in one quarter
The filing also shows OpenAI owes Microsoft $7.2 billion, while Microsoft's stake has slipped to 24%.
The answer
Microsoft reported $10 billion in OpenAI-related revenue for the quarter ended 30 September.
What happened: Microsoft reported $10 billion in revenue from its commercial arrangements with OpenAI in a regulatory filing. The revenue covers the quarter ended 30 September 2026, Microsoft's first quarter of fiscal 2027. TechCrunch reported the figure.
The numbers: The $10 billion is about 11% of Microsoft's $92.3 billion total quarterly revenue. Microsoft's revenue record covers the same quarter. OpenAI-related revenue totalled $24.1 billion for fiscal 2026, and the latest quarter implies roughly $40 billion a year.
The details: The arrangements include revenue-sharing payments. The filing does not split the $10 billion between revenue sharing and Azure cloud services. Neither company has confirmed OpenAI's reported 20% revenue share to Microsoft.
The context: An April 2026 agreement has OpenAI sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap. OpenAI can also work with competing cloud providers. In October 2025, Microsoft gave up its exclusive hold on OpenAI, and OpenAI committed to buying an additional $250 billion in Azure services.
The catch: OpenAI owed Microsoft $7.2 billion at the end of September, up from $6 billion at the end of June. TechCrunch notes that this balance covers past transactions, not new revenue.
In their words: TechCrunch described the filing as showing "the enormous financial ties that remain between the two companies."
Why it matters: The two companies increasingly compete for the same customers, even as their financial ties stay large. Microsoft's ownership stake in OpenAI fell from about 25% in June to 24% in September. Microsoft did not say what caused the drop.
What's next: TechCrunch said it had asked for more information on how the $10 billion breaks down.
