GitHub Copilot moves to usage-based billing

From 1 June 2026, GitHub Copilot moved to usage-based 'flex' billing. The monthly plan price is now an entry point, with heavier use — particularly agentic, multi-step workflows — billed on top. GitHub also launched a new $100 Max tier for high-consumption users. Developer reaction was swift and vocal: teams that had budgeted around a flat subscription found themselves holding a variable bill.

Copilot's move is part of a June 2026 shake-up across the AI coding market. Windsurf rebranded to Devin Desktop; Google's Gemini CLI moved to Antigravity — both landing in the same window as the broader repricing wave. The driver is structural: agentic workflows (the feature class vendors spent 2024–25 pushing) cost far more to serve than simple autocomplete, and the flat-rate subsidy that won market share can't run indefinitely. For light users — quick autocomplete, the odd chat — the bill may barely move; the exposure sits in heavy, autonomous use. The practical reframe: treat AI-tool spend like cloud spend, because it now scales with how hard you run it.

What to watch. Whether GitHub ships legible usage dashboards that let teams forecast and cap spend. That transparency — not the base price — is what will determine whether enterprise customers stay or start evaluating Cursor, Kiro, and other rivals on total cost of ownership. The vendor that makes its bill most predictable wins the finance-approved segment, regardless of whether its base price is higher or lower.
