xAI ships Grok Imagine 1.5: a still photo becomes video

On 3 June 2026, xAI made grok-imagine-video-1.5-preview available in preview via its API. The model takes a single still image and generates cinematic video from it — camera movement, atmospheric detail, physical plausibility — while staying faithful to the source, at up to 720p, per xAI. Access is through xAI's developer API; no consumer app yet.

It follows a May 2026 release: xAI launched Quality Mode for image generation and editing, available to enterprise and teams via the Grok Imagine API. The pattern is deliberate — a creative stack built rung by rung: image quality improvements first, then video. This is not a one-off demo; it's part of an announced API-first creative product line.

'Preview' — xAI's own word — means early and evolving. Quality and behaviour may change before general availability. Capability claims are xAI's own; independent comparisons don't yet exist. 'Up to 720p' is honest and below the higher-resolution output that mature, generally available competitors (Runway, Sora, Kling) claim by their own figures. Neither caveat is buried; both are worth knowing before building production decisions on this release.

Watch for: a GA release with higher resolution and stability; whether xAI's aggressive text-API pricing (Grok 4.3: $1.25/M in, $2.50/M out, per xAI docs) extends to creative-media endpoints; and whether developer uptake on image-to-video API access is enough to pull builders away from established alternatives. The creative-stack build is real; the competitive question is how fast the quality closes the gap.
