Qwen is Alibaba's family of mostly-free AI models, among the most-downloaded open AI.
What it is. Qwen is Alibaba's family of AI models, most released as open-weight under the permissive Apache 2.0 licence — free to download, run, fine-tune and use commercially. That openness made it the most-downloaded open AI family in the world (reportedly over half of all open-source downloads).
Why it matters. Qwen is a major reason open-weight AI became competitive with closed frontier models — and the base that countless other projects build on.
